What is Radon?

-Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas.  It is released during the natural decay of uranium, which is found in most rock and soil.  Radon is odorless, invisible, and without taste.  Radon, like other radioactive materials, undergoes radioactive decay that forms decay products.  Radon and its decay products release radioactive energy that can damage lung tissue in a way that may cause the beginning of lung cancer.  The more radon you are exposed to, the greater the risk of eventually developing lung cancer.

Where can Radon be found?

-Homes with high levels of radon have been found in every state.  In fact, radon levels can vary greatly from home to home.  Even levels next door can be very different.

Why should I test for Radon?

-Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates.  Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer.  Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.  About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked.

-Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), a measurement of radioactivity.  In the United States, the average indoor radon level is about 1.3 pCi/L.  The average  outdoor level is about 0.4 pCi/l.  The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend testing all homes and fixing radon levels between 2 pCi/l and 4 pCi/l.
